Unreinforced Masonry Wall Compressive Capacity
Unreinforced masonry walls — brick or block laid up with mortar but without embedded steel reinforcement — carry axial load through direct compression in the masonry units and mortar joints. Because there is no reinforcing steel to redistribute stress or resist tension, unreinforced masonry design leans heavily on conservative allowable-stress limits applied to the net (mortar-joint-reduced) cross-sectional area.Unreinforced masonry is particularly vulnerable to loads it wasn't explicitly designed for — eccentric loading, out-of-plane wind, or seismic demand — because without reinforcement there is little ductility or reserve once the masonry starts to crack; this is a major reason many seismic codes now restrict or prohibit new unreinforced masonry construction in higher-hazard regions.
The allowable axial capacity is taken as a conservative fraction of the masonry compressive strength times net area, P_allow = 0.25·f_m·A_n. where f_m is the specified compressive strength of the masonry assembly, A_n is the net cross-sectional area per unit length of wall (mortar joints and hollow cores deducted), and P_allow is the resulting allowable axial capacity.
The 0.25 factor applied to the masonry strength times net area reflects the conservative allowable-stress margin traditionally used for unreinforced masonry, accounting for workmanship variability and the lack of ductile reserve.
Results
An allowable capacity of about 900 kN per unit length here reflects how conservatively unreinforced masonry is treated compared to reinforced concrete or steel at a similar nominal strength — the 0.25 factor alone represents a substantial built-in margin beyond typical material safety factors. This capacity also needs to be reduced further for wall slenderness (height-to-thickness ratio) and any load eccentricity, both of which are checked separately and can lower the usable capacity significantly for taller, thinner walls. Because there is no reinforcement to fall back on, any crack or damage found in an unreinforced masonry wall during inspection should be evaluated conservatively rather than assumed to have residual capacity.
