Earthwork Volume by the Average End Area Method
Earthwork quantities for road, pipeline, and site grading projects are commonly estimated from cross-sectional areas taken at regular survey stations along the alignment. The average end area method approximates the volume between two adjacent stations as a prism using the average of their two end areas.This is the workhorse method behind most earthwork quantity takeoffs and payment estimates on linear construction projects, valued for being simple to compute by hand while staying reasonably accurate when station spacing is not too large.
The volume between stations is V = L·(A_1 + A_2)/2, the station spacing times the average of the two end areas. where L is the spacing between the two stations, and A_1 and A_2 are the cross-sectional cut or fill areas at each station.
Averaging the two end areas and multiplying by the distance between them approximates the earthwork prism’s volume.
Results
A volume of 450 m³ between two 30 m stations is a typical earthwork quantity for a moderate cut or fill section. This method slightly overestimates volume where the ground changes shape sharply between stations, so closer station spacing on irregular terrain improves accuracy; the total project volume is simply the sum of these station-to-station segments.
