Traffic Stream Density from Flow and Speed
Traffic flow, speed, and density are linked by one of the most basic relationships in transportation engineering: flow equals density times speed. Rearranged, it lets an engineer estimate how tightly packed vehicles are on a road segment just from a flow count and an average speed measurement.Density is what drivers actually feel as congestion — a road can carry the same flow at either a low density and high speed (free-flowing) or a high density and low speed (congested), and knowing which regime a facility is in shapes everything from signal timing to ramp metering decisions.
Density is k = q/v, the flow rate divided by the space-mean speed. where q is the traffic flow rate and v is the average travel speed of the stream.
Dividing the counted flow by the measured speed gives the average spacing-based density of vehicles on the roadway.
Results
A density of roughly 20 vehicles per kilometer per lane indicates free-flowing conditions; density climbing toward 40–50 veh/km signals the onset of congestion as the roadway approaches its capacity. Because flow can be sustained by very different speed/density combinations, density (not flow alone) is the metric traffic engineers use to classify level of service.
