Water Treatment Tank Detention Time
Many treatment processes — sedimentation, disinfection contact, equalization — need water to remain in a tank for a minimum amount of time to work properly. That detention time is simply the tank volume divided by the flow rate passing through it, assuming the tank behaves like a simple flow-through basin.Too short a detention time means particles do not settle or disinfectant does not have enough contact time to inactivate pathogens, which is why regulators specify minimum detention times for treatment processes and operators check this ratio against them directly.
The detention time is t = V/Q, tank volume divided by the inflow rate. where V is the tank volume and Q is the volumetric flow rate through the tank.
Dividing the volume the water occupies by the rate at which it flows through gives the average time each parcel of water spends in the tank.
Results
A detention time of about 10,000 seconds (roughly 2.8 hours) is in the typical range for a sedimentation basin. If the required process detention time is longer than this, the operator must either enlarge the tank or reduce the flow rate — running the process faster than its designed detention time undermines treatment performance even if every other parameter looks fine.
