Material Cost from Unit Price and Quantity
The simplest cost calculation in any project — material or otherwise — is quantity times unit price, but it is also the one used most often, whether pricing out lumber for a deck, tile for a floor, or bulk components for a manufacturing run. At 500 units and $0.45 each, the total material cost comes to $225 — a small enough figure that shopping around for a better unit price may not be worth the effort, but the same arithmetic at ten times the quantity would make even a one-cent-per-unit price difference worth negotiating. This calculation deliberately ignores shipping, tax, and bulk discounts, so it should be treated as a baseline material cost rather than a final quote.
