Paint Coverage — Cans Needed for a Wall Area
Buying the right number of paint cans before starting a job avoids two common frustrations: running out mid-wall with a mismatched-tint replacement can, or overbuying cans that sit unused. The calculation is simple division, but getting the coverage rate and wall area right first is what makes the estimate reliable.Real paint jobs typically need this number rounded up to a whole can (a partial can still has to be bought in full), and many painters add a margin for a second coat or for touch-ups, so this straightforward calculation is usually just the starting point for a slightly larger final purchase.
The number of cans needed is N = A/A_can, wall area divided by the coverage area of one can. where A_wall2 is the total wall area to be painted and A_can is the coverage area of a single can, giving the resulting number of cans N_cans.
Divide the total wall area by the coverage per can to find how many cans are needed — in practice this should be rounded up to the next whole can.

Covering 250 m² of wall with cans rated at 10 m² each needs 25 cans for a single coat — a number that should be rounded up if it were not already exact, since a partial can still requires buying a whole one. Applying a second coat, as is common for full coverage and color consistency, would simply double the can count, so many painters buy for two coats from the start rather than risk a mid-project color-match run.
