Calc numbering
A reviewer who wants to query one line of your sheet needs a way to point at
it. Turn on Calc №s and every calculation gets a bracketed
label that follows the document sections: [1.1],
[1.2], and so on. A comment can then say the load factor in
[2.3] looks high, instead of the third equation on page 4.
Turn numbering on
- Open the Math Format tab.
- Choose Calc №s in the Numbering group, which shows calculation numbers
[section.n]after each calc, following the document sections. The button stays highlighted while numbering is on.
This is a worksheet setting rather than a per-region format. Every calculation on the sheet is numbered, or none is. Mark your headings as sections first, or the labels will not mean much.
How the numbers are worked out
The first part is the number of the
section header above the calculation,
marked on the Text tab with Section and a level from 1 to 3 and listed in the
sections sidebar. The second
part counts calculations under that header in
evaluation order, restarting
at 1 whenever a new section begins. Under a level-2 header numbered 2.1 the
calcs therefore read [2.1.1], [2.1.2].
A sheet with no sections at all still numbers its calcs in order as
[1], [2], and so on. Text, plots, and lists are
never numbered, and regions in the page header and footer are skipped.
Where the numbers show up
Calc numbers appear on the canvas and in a
printed PDF, which is what makes
them useful in a review or a report. Cite [2.3] in a
comment or in the covering text and the
reader can find it. They are labels only, not variable names. You cannot
write [2.3] in a formula and get its value back.
