Headers and footers

On the Document tab, Header and Footer show or hide the page bands. Top and Bottom (Margins group) set those band heights in pixels.

The Document ribbon with Header, Footer, and Fields.
Document tab. Header and Footer on the right; Fields insert Page #, Pages, Date, and Title.

Show the bands

  1. Open the Document tab.
  2. Choose Header and/or Footer. The page grows a band at the top or bottom.
  3. Adjust Top and Bottom if the band is too tight for a logo plus a title.
  4. Click inside the band and type, or insert a field. Double-click empty space in the header or footer band to place a text region there (same idea as double-clicking the page body).

Fields

Click inside a header or footer region, then use the Fields group:

  • Page # — the printed page number (tooltip: Insert page number (updates per printed page)).
  • Pages — total pages.
  • Date — today’s date.
  • Title — the worksheet name (the same name you click in the Quick Access bar).

Header and footer regions do not take part in evaluation order. They repeat on every printed page. Zoom on the Document tab does not change the printed page size — see Print and PDF.
